The hardest part when first learning to fly your Remote Control Helicopter is working the various different controls interchangeably. You will often have to think fast, and anticipate your Remote Control Helicopters moves to respond in mid-flight to its movements. Often you will be using the four different Remote Control Helicopter controls at seemingly the same time. Being able to think on you feet and understand not only your personal Remote Control Helicopter, but also the power and direction of the wind and other various obstacles is the key to flying with grace and safety.

The controls we just mentioned are also known in flight circles as roll, pitch and yaw. These are the various rotations that different aircrafts move. In a nutshell, the rolling movement is when the helicopter rotates turning from right way up to inverted while also maintaining heading; pitching is when you move the helicopter’s nose up and down; yawning is rotating the nose to one side or the other using the rudder. Many Remote Control Helicopter enthusiasts stress the importance of having correct “trim”, meaning your helicopter will not rotate on any axis (roll, pitch and yaw) when in a stable hover mode with no input on your helicopter controls. Adjusting your trim is an advanced technique that we won’t be able to get into here but one which you will need to master if you hope to take your Remote Control Helicopter flight to the professional level.
